Residential Installation
I’ve succeeded at a few residential electrician projects, but more often than not I’ve spent lots of money on tools and lots of time only to end up calling a professional. I never enjoy the bill but I always appreciate a trained professional who knows and follows common practices. Compared to some of my duct tape and wire home solutions a professional makes me appreciate the value of a proper electrician. Here are some simple questions to help you determine if you should attempt your next electric repair by yourself or if you should hire a professional.
Do you have the tools for the job? Electricians drive a big truck because lots of different tools are required to do proper electric repairs. Specialty tools are expensive and will probably never pay for themselves for the occasional user. Is there any risk that your attempted repair could cause bigger problems? If so then let the professional take the risk! How valuable is your time? A professional electrician may be able to do a job in an hour or two that would take you a day or two. Can your time be spent doing something more valuable? How is your health? These jobs are always a strain on your back, neck, knees. I’ve had back and knee problems for years. The little bit of money I might save by attempting a residential job myself will never make up for the chiropractor bills later
There is no shame in hiring a professional electrician to handle all your residential electric needs.
